Mikaela Shiffrin: Why I won’t be objectified She admitted that the possibility of making history was the extra motivation she needed to power through. “Today was something else,” she said of the occasion. “There’s been a lot going on these Championships since the Super-G win. I certainly had a lot of doubt today but in the most important moments it was okay. “Like I said, my team was just spectacular this whole time to get me to toughen up and do the job. I’m really, really happy.” The packed …

The Lover And The Fighter: Cory Booker And Elizabeth Warren Embody The 2020 Divide

LAWRENCE, Mass. ― As Sen. Democrat wants voters to know about her, it’s that she’s a fighter. The word “fight” is in the title of both of the books she’s written while in the Senate (A Fighting Chance and This Fight Is Our Fight). In the 40-minute speech she delivered Saturday, she used the word 28 times. “This is the fight of our lives,” Warren said to the crowd of 3,500 who gathered at a historic mill in freezing temperatures here, after telling a story about immigrant women striking for better pay and working conditions. “The fight to build an America where dreams are possible, an America that works for everyone. I am in that fight all the way.” Warren’s team …

Carmakers brace for a terrible year as China’s slowdown deepens

Hong Kong (CNN Business)After a tough 2018, global automakers look set for another bruising year. The world’s second largest economy is feeling the effects of government attempts to rein in risky lending after a rapid rise in debt levels. Trade tensions with the United States and the removal of Chinese subsidies in the auto sector are making matters worse. Some of the world’s best known automakers are suffering as a result. GM said last month that its sales in China fell by 10% last year, compared to 2017. The Detroit-based company hopes to reverse the downturn this year by releasing more than 20 new models in China and shifting focus to electric vehicles. Ford’s (F) sales in China tumbled by …

Will backlash against Amazon’s NYC tax breaks kill other deals?

New York (CNN Business)Is the Amazon-New York City split up on Valentine’s Day the start of a new trend? There are more job openings than there are job candidates, and employers in Wisconsin and New York could be rightly concerned that they could lose workers they need due to a major new employer coming to town with the help of their own tax dollars. “The labor market is as strong as it ever has been,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody’s Analytics. “I think this backlash reflects a 4% unemployment. If this was 2012, 2013, and we had more typical levels of unemployment, you’d have half as much opposition and their voices wouldn’t be as powerful.” The Amazon deal …

BuzzFeed notes that when Harris was district attorney of San Francisco in 2010, she opposed Proposition 19, which would have made California the first state to legalize marijuana. The Hill. Pew Research Center suggests that 62 percent of Americans favor legalization of cannabis.

How sustainable is supermarket palm oil?

In 2018, the supermarket Iceland announced that it would stop using palm oil altogether in its own-brand products. That proved more difficult than it thought and Iceland now says that work should be completed by April 2019. All the UK’s other major supermarkets use palm oil certified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), but it has four types of certification which are not obvious to consumers. They are: Identity preserved – involves palm oil that can be traced back to a single certified supplier Segregated – involves palm oil that can be traced back to several certified suppliers Mass balance – where sustainable palm oil from certified sources is mixed with ordinary palm oil throughout the supply chain …

Planned Parenthood president: What gives me hope

(CNN)On Thursday, the Supreme Court temporarily blocked a Louisiana law that would require a doctor to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the facility where she performs an abortion. That appears to be President Donald Trump’s goal. I sat in the balcony of the House chamber during last week’s State of the Union address, angry and disgusted as he called for Congress to pass laws restricting safe, legal abortion and criticized state legislation that seeks to protect access to health care. He doubled down at a campaign rally Monday night where he continued lying to the American people, scaring viewers, and shaming women and their families. I won’t repeat what he said because it’s deliberately misleading …

Chris Evans Asks Trump 1 Blunt Question About His Base

may be done playing “Captain America.”  Evans, who in recent months has not been shy about using his public profile to criticize Trump, asked why the president continued to confuse weather with climate, “despite literally everyone explaining it to you every time you tweet this ignorance.” Trump revived his “Pocahontas” slur against the Democratic presidential hopeful. Many people also interpreted his use of the term “TRAIL” to be a mocking reference to the historic government-forced relocation of Native Americans called the “Trail of Tears.” Evans said that by Hume’s logic, Trump’s “ignorance has become normalized/expected.” RELATED… Trump Fan Launches 'Incredibly Violent Attack' On BBC Cameraman At El Paso Rally John Oliver Gets Booed By Colbert's Audience Over Trump Prediction Harrison …

Border Towns ‘Safer Than Any City Trump Has Lived,’ Says Texas Congressman

Donald Trump’s fake narrative that U.S. border towns are lawless frontiers, declaring that they’re in fact “safer than any city the president has ever lived in.” McAllen, Texas (population 145,000), in Gonzalez’s district didn’t have a single homicide last year, the congressman pointed out in an interview Saturday on MSNBC. He added: “I can assure you McAllen is safer than any city the president has ever lived in. It’s much safer than New York City, it’s much safer than Washington, D.C. I could walk around the middle of the night in the city of McAllen without a single threat … this campaign rhetoric that has continued for two years really needs to stop. People need to look at FBI stats and …

Fighting climate change may be easier than we think

(CNN)With the plethora of dispiriting reports on climate change — we recently learned, for instance, that our oceans are warming at least 40% faster than the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change originally thought — many elected officials have taken up the mantle of fighting global warming. Take the United States as an example. Wind and solar power are now on average the least expensive ways of generating electricity. In some locations, wind and solar energy prices are as little as one-third the cost of coal. Even without including the contribution of coal to global warming, it is simply no longer a cost-effective energy source. Wind and solar are now economically sounder investments. But what about the unreliability of renewable energy …

Reality Check: Thefts of catalytic converters

Trade association the British Metals Recycling Association has said stretched resources mean the police are unlikely to prosecute scrap dealers operating illegally and are more likely to encourage them to apply for licences retrospectively. Indeed, it is not unusual to see advertisements for illegal scrap metal dealers offering cash for scrap. The Met suggests worried car-owners take steps to make their vehicles less vulnerable, such as: A serial number could be engraved on the catalytic converter to make it easier to trace and harder to sell at a reputable dealer If the converter is bolted on, it may be possible to weld the bolts shut, although that would deter only thieves working with just a spanner Protective coverings are available …
