My 30 Animal Portraits That I Painted Using Watercolors And Pencils

My name is Ashley McDonald. I am a 19-year-old artist based in New Zealand, and I love to create art using a variety of mediums, including pencils and watercolor paints. Throughout my life I have always been interested in the beauty of nature; especially animals of all shapes and sizes. I am currently in my second year of university, studying towards a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Ecology & Biodiversity and Environmental Science. In my spare time, I love to combine my passion for animals with my passion for creating. #1 I have been creating artwork since the moment I could hold a pencil, but I started taking art seriously around the age of 15 when I received my first …

5G Networks Could Throw Weather Forecasting Into Chaos

If you had a choice between a better, faster cell phone signal and an accurate weather forecast, which would you pick? That’s the question facing federal officials as they decide whether to auction off more of the wireless spectrum or heed meteorologists who say that such a move could throw US weather forecasting into chaos. On Capitol Hill Thursday, NOAA’s acting chief, Neil Jacobs, said that interference from 5G wireless phones could reduce the accuracy of forecasts by 30 percent. That's equivalent, he said, to the quality of weather predictions four decades ago. “If you look back in time to see when our forecast scale was roughly 30 percent less than today, it was 1980,” Jacobs told the House Subcommittee …

Move Over, San Andreas: Theres an Ominous New Fault in Town

Many of Faulds’ colleagues dismiss his idea as controversial, fundamentally unprovable, or even simply wrong. It may be difficult to persuade them otherwise: Unlike the San Andreas, which is visible from space, the Walker Lane has yet to form a single, continuous line across the landscape. Still, Faulds has a pretty good idea of where it begins. Using a combination of old-fashioned fieldwork and modern technologies, he is now busily trying to find the rest. Last fall, I drove the nearly 500 miles up Route 395 from LA to Reno to meet him and learn how his tectonic premonition might come to pass. Tabitha Soren Faulds picked me up outside my hotel early one morning in a Chevy Tahoe. Strips …

‘Asthma alley’: why minorities bear burden of pollution inequity caused by white people

Mott Haven in the South Bronx is a classic example where black and Hispanic residents experience a particularly insidious environmental inequality Daniel Chervoni looked out at the busy street from the small community park he tends as a gardener in the South Bronx and clenched his fist as another Fresh Direct diesel truck roared by, spewing exhaust as it took a popular short-cut through the neighborhood. They are the reason for our pain, this is why the lungs of Mott Havens residents are suffering, he said. The park is a little patch of green squeezed between dense housing and a school in the low-income New York City neighborhood of Mott Haven, sometimes nicknamed Asthma Alley because it has some of …

Beto O’Rourke, friend of the fossil fuel industry, is no climate hero | Kate Aronoff

ORourke wants to be everything to everyone. To take a look back at his career, thats an invitation hes extended to the fossil fuel industry We are truly now, more than ever, the last great hope of this Earth, Robert Francis Beto ORourke ended a video announcing his presidential bid. At this moment of maximum peril and maximum potential, lets show ourselves and those who will succeed us in this great country just who we are and what we can do. That sounds pretty green and maybe even refreshing after two years of Donald Trump. But ORourkes candidacy is kind of like the iceberg lettuce of politics. You can load it up with whatever you want, but underneath all the …
