Kashmir: New violence feared in old flashpoint, as Indian ruling party pushes long-held agenda

New Delhi (CNN)Hindu nationalists in India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have long dreamed of stripping Indian-controlled Kashmir — named Jammu and Kashmir state — of its decades-old special status. The “abrogation of Article 370” was also mentioned in the BJP election manifesto, released in April ahead of India’s general elections. It was part of a promise “to overcome all obstacles that come in the way of development and provide adequate financial resources to all regions of the state.” A long-held goal On Monday, Modi’s government finally moved to revoke Article 370, in what analysts say is part of a Hindu nationalist agenda. Pakistan, which also claims Kashmir, described the move as illegal. It is not clear what happens next, …

Beijing to speak out after weeks of Hong Kong protests

Hong Kong (CNN)China’s top Hong Kong policy office will on Monday address the escalating protests in the semi-autonomous city over the past eight weekends. Riot police confronted hundreds of mainly young protesters who tried to reach the Chinese government’s Liaison Office. During demonstrations last weekend, activists vandalized the building and flung paint at the national emblem, drawing a furious reaction from Beijing. The situation quickly deteriorated. Police fired multiple rounds of tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters, turning nearby streets into smoke-filled battlegrounds. Protesters, many of whom had armed themselves with improvised shields and bamboo sticks, fought back, hurling bricks, eggs and other objects at police lines. The two groups continued in a tit-for-tat struggle, with protesters at one …

Kim Jong Un seen beside apparent submarine in state media photographs

(CNN)North Korean state media released images Tuesday of leader Kim Jong Un inspecting what appeared to be a submarine under construction. Three photographs released by KCNA showed Kim, in a gray suit, standing besides the hulking vessel inside a nondescript warehouse. Analysts said the Kim regime has sought to build a viable nuclear-armed submarine to enhance its deterrence capabilities, as the vessels are hard for adversaries to track and destroy. The regime successfully test-fired a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) in 2016. Though Pyongyang is believed to boast a fleet of about 70 submarines, experts say most of them are likely old, loud and unable to fire nuclear-armed ballsitic missiles. Dave Schmerler, a senior research associate at the James Martin Center …

Zhiling Ma, who appeared in Melbourne court on Thursday, was charged with trafficking and importing a marketable quantity of a border patrol drug, CNN affiliate Nine News reports. “It’s quite a large find to take off the streets, really,” Kershaw said of the $20 million drug …

Facebook wades into world’s longest civil war, but does it know what it’s doing?

(CNN)For more than 60 years, a protracted civil war has simmered across Myanmar, largely hidden from the outside world. CNN reached out to Facebook, which said it had evidence that the four groups were responsible for attacks against civilians and were engaged in violence in Myanmar, and indicated that other non-state armed groups were part of ongoing investigations. Removing hate Less than a decade ago, just 0.3% of Myanmar’s population was connected to the internet as the nation emerged from years of isolated military rule. There are now 18 million Facebook users and the site is so popular that for many it has become synonymous with the internet and a primary source of news and information. Facebook has recently been …
