Samara From ‘The Ring’ Is All Grown Up And She’s Gorgeous

In the noughties, few horror movies gained as much notoriety as The Ring. Released in 2002, it was a remake of the 1998 Japanese movie Ringu – which gained cult status in the West where the horror genre had been dominated by slasher flicks.

Unlike slasher movies which depicted a lot of violence and gore on-screen, The Ring relied on psychological horror to scare its viewers, and boy did it work. To this day, The Ring is still cited as being one of the scariest horror movies of all time. Centred around the urban legend of a video tape which kills viewers within seven days of watching it, The Ring follows journalist Rachel after she’s hired to investigate the death of teen who saw the tape. It doesn’t take long for her to encounter the evil spirit Samara. Eleven-year-old Samara’s ghost is played by Daveigh Chase, who was just 12 at the time of the movie’s release. Orphaned at birth, Samara was a powerful young woman who accidentally terrorised her adoptive parents, causing her mother to drown her in a well. Samara possessed the power of “thoughtography”, which is how she inadvertently terrorised her parents. It allowed her to burn images and thoughts onto other people’s minds and eventually enabled her to create the cursed video tape from the well. When the video is viewed, her ghost is temporarily free to enact her revenge on the world… As you can imagine, playing a vengeful ghost is no easy task for a child actor, but Chase rose to the challenge after getting her big break earlier that year in Lilo and Stitch. Her performance was so good that she won the MTV Movie Award for Best Villain. But what happened to Chase after The Ring? Well, she continued acting, notably in HBO’s Big Love, and grew into a gorgeous young woman. Whilst it’s no surprise that child actors look different from their younger selves, given that Chase is best-known for playing one of horror’s most iconic characters, the then-and-now difference between her and Samara is startling to say the least. The now 27-year-old is pictured below on one of her many modelling shoots. Chase’s most recent major role was as Rhonda Volmer in HBO’s TV series Big Love – a character she played from 2006 to 2011. Since then, she’s appeared in other movies including Jack Goes Home (2016) and American Romance (2016). Unlike many other child stars, Chase didn’t fall prey to the “curse” and has lived a happy and healthy life. But what about Samara? After all, her story didn’t end with Chase’s portrayal of the role, although archived footage from The Ring was used in its 2005 sequel. When the franchise returned in 2017 with the movie Rings, its makers decided to hire an actress could make Samara even more terrifying than she’d been in the previous movies. They did this by hiring professional contortionist Bonnie Morgan. Rings was released in February of this year, and, whilst it didn’t receive the best critical response, it was a box office smash hit, grossing $83million worldwide. So it’s unlikely that we’ve seen or heard the last of Samara. … “Seven days.” On the subject of horror movies, it turns out that there’s a number of famous horror houses that you can actually own! I wouldn’t move into 112 Ocean Avenue even if someone paid me to. Buying these houses is just asking for trouble…
