Rose McGowan has become the most vocal figure in the Harvey Weinstein debacle. As you probably already know, earlier this month she claimed that Weinstein had raped her in her youth when they both attended the Sundance Film Festival in 1997.
According to the Times, she received a $100,000 settlement as a result of the incident, although this did little to work in her favor considering she could have received a whopping $1 million instead. A settlement that she claims would have helped her avoid an arrest warrant.
McGowan is one of the many women who had accused the former movie mogul of either sexual assault, harassment or rape. But now the outspoken actress has been issued with an arrest warrant for supposedly being in possession of drugs. However, she claims that this would never have happened if she had agreed to take a larger chunk of Weinstein’s cash in exchange for her silence. In January, McGowan was the subject of a police investigation and now has a felony charge against her from Virginia State police. She left her personal belongings on a United Airlines flight headed towards Washington Dulles International Airport. According to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department who obtained the warrant, her belongings were sent away for testing and came back as positive for narcotics. However, the tests did not reveal what exactly the drugs were. In February, the police obtained an arrest warrant and then attempted to get in touch with the 44-year-old actress to tell her that she would have to appear in court in Loudoun County, Virginia. The warrant has now been submitted into a national law enforcement database. McGowan still has not released an official statement with regards to the arrest warrant. However, she did give a very telling reply to a tweet from Ashlee Marie Preston stating: “If @rosemcgowan would have taken that million dollars in hush money I’m quite sure this wouldn’t even be a headline…”. And what was that reply? She simply responded with the word “FACT” early this morning, supporting the Twitter user’s claim. Essentially, if McGowan had taken the $1 million from Weinstein in exchange for her silence on his sexual misconduct, there would have been no arrest warrant and no resulting news story according to the actress. In the now infamous New York Times interviewMcGowan gave, she claimed that she had been offered $1 million by someone associated with Weinstein if she agreed to sign a nondisclosure agreement. Interestingly, the candid actress also tweeted yesterday confirming that the police had obtained a warrant for her arrest. At the time, even she was unaware of all the details attached to the warrant.
“Are they trying to silence me? There is a warrant out for my arrest in Virginia. What a load of HORSES**T”, she wrote on Twitter.
She made no comments as to what the supposed crime could be, but clearly felt that the whole situation was unjust. Although McGowan did not accept the $1 million deal, she initially believed that the $100,000 settlement that she did accept included a nondisclosure clause. In fact, it wasn’t until last summer that she realized she was legally allowed to disclose the details of what Weinstein allegedly did to her. And most of you will know, earlier this month, she accused the famous movie producer of rape on Twitter.
Rose McGowan’s boldness during the explosive revelation kickstarted a series of other revelations from women stating that Weinstein had abused them in some way. As of now more than 80 women, including some of his own employees, have come forward with various allegations of sexual assault and harassment.
Weinstein is still in rehab in a bid to overcome his sex addiction, but his spokeswoman maintains that he “unequivocally denies any allegations of non-consensual sex.”
Rose McGowan has remained outspoken during the entire debacle, and even now that there is a warrant out for her arrest, it’s safe to say she will remain the forthright and outspoken woman we all know her to be. It is still up in the air as to what will follow the arrest warrant, especially considering the illegal substance she was carrying has not yet been identified. But we shall see as the story unfolds. For now, watch McGowan giving a powerful speech soon after the Weinstein allegations, and ask yourself if she is really the person who needs to be arrested?
