As Trump seeks an exit from Afghanistan, Moscow steps in

Moscow (CNN)The Trump administration may be negotiating an exit from Afghanistan, but Russia is stepping up its game there. Then there was the guest list, topped by Hamid Karzai, who served as Afghanistan’s president from late 2001 until 2014 and still has enormous political stature. It was striking to see him sitting at the table in Moscow with representatives of the Taliban. Karzai, who was escorted into Afghanistan by a US special operations team during the campaign to topple the Taliban in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, had long reached out to what he called “Taliban brothers” in efforts to coax them toward peace negotiations. But he was also infuriated by a US-supported effort to create a Taliban office …

No-confidence vote in Labour MP pulled

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell had earlier sparked a backlash from supporters of the MP by suggesting she should have pledged loyalty to Labour and saying she had been linked to an alleged Labour “breakaway” party. ‘Intolerable’ In a statement after the motions were first put forward, Ms Berger said she would fight anti-Semitism wherever she found it, including in Labour, where it was being “ignored”. Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson wrote to the party’s general secretary Jennie Formby, calling for the Liverpool Wavertree Constituency Labour Party (CLP) to be suspended. He wrote: “It is clear to me that Luciana Berger is being bullied. This behaviour by her local party is intolerable.” Labour row over MP no confidence vote How the …

Watch the 2019 State of the Union address here (or not)

It’s that time again — time to hear what kind of state our precious union is in. For those of you inclined to watch the temporarily delayed speech by the President, you can of course watch it in a bar and invent your own drinking game, but you can also stay home and watch it on YouTube or C-SPAN. The drinks are cheaper — and stronger. Of course C-SPAN will have it raw, and the White House stream will probably also be a plain one. But if you want a bit of partisan spice and occasional pull quotes along the bottom, many networks are also doing live YouTube coverage. There’s a list here; pick your poison. The broadcast starts at …

Two more bangers for the Switchs NES selection: Kirby and Super Mario Bros 2

Nostalgia for the NES is high following the success of Nintendo’s classic mini consoles and the launch of its Switch Online service, which just got a couple more great additions to its selection of 8-bit games: Kirby’s Adventure and the immortally weird Super Mario Bros 2. Kirby had just made his debut on the Game Boy, but the NES follow-up really improved things. Better controls, better graphics, still hard as hell. Super Mario Bros 2 is remembered as a curiosity, but it deserves more than that. Sure, it’s just an asset swap for Doki Doki Panic, but that doesn’t matter. It’s a fantastic game and you should take this opportunity to play it all the way through.

Researchers May Have Found A Link Between Depression And Gut Bacteria

Depression and quality of life appear to be associated with certain species of bacteria found in the human gut, according to a new study by Belgian researchers. The authors found that two groups of bacteria, Coprococcus and Dialister, were depleted in people suffering from depression. The findings are reported in Nature Microbiology. The research team found this correlation by combining the fecal microbiome data of 1,054 individuals enrolled in the Flemish Gut Flora Project with their mental health diagnoses. They then validated the finding by studying an independent group of 1,063 people from the Dutch LifeLinesDEEP cohort and a group of clinically depressed patients at the University Hospitals Leuven. “The relationship between gut microbial metabolism and mental health is a controversial topic in microbiome …

Kids Get Their Revenge On School Through The Medium Of Google Maps

A school on Google Maps has had its name changed by a disgruntled student as a prank. Hornsea School and Language College in East Yorkshire, England, was briefly changed to read “Hornsea Prison & Hell on Earth” in an act that would have had to have been approved by the school’s administrator.  The prank is believed to have been done by a pupil at the school. All you have to do is submit a name change to Google in order to get it updated. However, the change does have to be approved by the business owner, leaving open the possibility that this was an inside job. The “error” has now been corrected. Google Maps “We recommend that all schools take …

Lifetime just released a movie about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in honor of their upcoming wedding

Senator Ben Sasse is getting trolled with fortune cookies.Image: CQ-Roll Call, Inc. Back in my day, people sent hate mail to their representatives the good old fashioned way — with letters. When I was a young kid, I once sent “hate mail” to George H.W. Bush using cut out magazine letters, accusing the president of failing to adequately protect the dolphin community. Nowadays, angry citizens are more sophisticated. They’re even willing to use edible means of engagement. Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse, for example, started receiving fortune cookie hate mail. today’s cookie expressed a hope for me “to be trapped in an elevator” with folks who are really angry at me https://t.co/mOdOQfJIRx — Ben Sasse (@BenSasse) February 6, 2019 The Senator …

Organizational Products That Will Help Spark Joy Betches

Like the rest of the world, I am really, really obsessed with Marie Kondo right now. Like, I need her to follow me around and give me life advice all the time. She could tell me which of my dates are trash and don’t bring me joy. She’s like Xanax in person form with her little calming voice. There is nothing that woman can’t handle, and she’ll make it pretty and decluttered in the process. If you want to live as peacefully as Marie, you def can’t be throwing all your sh*t around all the time because living in clutter stresses everyone out. I bought a TON of organizational products after moving to smaller apartment last year and even more …

What the Japanese know about eating that keeps them healthy and long lived

Have you ever wondered why so many Asians, the Japanese, Chinese, Koreans and Vietnamese in particular seem to age well? Why so many of these folks are fit and healthy throughout their long lives? Sure, many Japanese who live stressful city lives might not fare as well as those who live in more rural areas, just like over here… yet even so, it always seems like they look younger than they truly are, doesn’t it? Recent studies have shown that the residents of Okinawa are some of the longest lived people on the planet. Not only do they live well past 100 with remarkable regularity… they don’t look like they’re that old either. On top of that, these long-lived Japanese …
