Mercury Made Me Do It: Weekend Horoscopes March 14-16 Betches

First of all, let’s start with a reminder that Mercury is still in retrograde. No, that doesn’t mean you can blame that for all of your problems. As tempting as it might be to retreat into your bed for the entire month of March, that might not be the most productive path forward, depending on your sign. Yes, you might still do it anyway, and that’s okay. But this weekend, try to really listen to yourself and decide what your body and spirit needs. That might be a chill weekend on the couch, or you might be f*cking raging for St. Patrick’s Day. Have fun pretending you loooove Guinness! Let’s see how the first planet is going to f*ck up …

Mob Of Chickens Gang Up To Peck Intruder Fox To Death

It’s very hard to take chickens seriously. Every now and again, though, these clucky creatures like to remind us they are not ones to be pushed around. After all, they are descended from dinosaurs. A furious gang of chickens at a poultry farm in France are suspected of killing a fox that snuck into their coop looking for a tasty snack, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reports. On the night of March 6, the young fox is thought to have let itself into an indoor chicken coop at an agriculture school in Pontivy, no doubt hoping to find itself some dinner. Unfortunately for the fox, he was met by 6,000 chickens who were in no mood to be messed around with. In scenes that make the French …

With Tech on the Defensive, SXSW Takes an Introspective Turn

The first five days or so of SXSW in Austin are always heavily weighted toward the interactive portion of the conference. The city’s downtown streets swell with lanyard-laden “entrepreneurs” and “founders” wearing that familiar uniform of T-shirts screen-printed with their company’s clever logo, an outfit made professional by throwing a blazer over the ensemble. They bounce from panel to panel and branded “house” to branded “house” (this year, on scooters, so many scooters) hawking their new apps and software products, each promising to be more revolutionary and life-changing and utterly necessary than the next. For years, the unspoken question at the conference seemed to be which company will become SXSW famous, like Persicope, Foursquare, or, most memorably, Twitter? But this …

Senate GOP effort on Trump border wall seems to fall short

After a closed-door lunch, GOP lawmakers predicted the Senate would approve a resolution Thursday annulling the emergency Trump has declared along the border. The Democratic-led House passed the legislation last month, meaning Senate assent would send it to Trump. “It was called turn out the lights, the party’s over,” said Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., recalling a favorite refrain of “Monday Night Football” announcers when a game was out of reach. “Well, that’s appropriate right now.” Republicans hoped Trump would support a separate measure curbing a president’s powers to declare future emergencies. Had he done so, they thought, it would be easier for reluctant GOP senators to support the emergency Trump has proclaimed to steer $3.6 billion more than Congress has …

Beware the ides of March, they say. But why?

(CNN)Every month has an ides, but only March is known for it. Why beware the Ides of March? Politicians, beware the Ides of March The date is marked by bloodshed: it’s most commonly associated with Julias Caesar’s brutal assassination in 44 BC. Caesar’s gruesome death was a pivotal point in Roman history. And William Shakespeare made the event even more famous with his play “Julius Caesar,” in which a soothsayer warns the Roman leader to beware the Ides of March. What happens on this date? Don’t pull a Julius Caesar and ignore bad omens. Over the years, several disasters have struck on this date. Of course, it’s all coincidental. March 15, 1939: Adolf Hitler spurned the Munich agreement and invaded …

Newfound spiders named for ‘Star Wars’ Stormtroopers

Like the Stormtroopers, the spiders “are very similar to each other, with some capacity for camouflage”; the sci-fi soldiers and the newfound spiders are also alike in being somewhat clumsy, according to the study. However, there is no evidence (yet) that the spiders, like their movie namesakes, are terrible at hitting moving targets with a blaster. [9 Animals with ‘Star Wars’-Inspired Names] Stormtroopers are a common sight across the Empire’s conquered worlds in the “Star Wars” universe, and Colombia’s bald-legged spiders turned out to be surprisingly numerous, too. Though the arachnids had never been reported in that country before, the study authors described two species in two previously known genera — Paratropis, Anisaspis— and four in the newfound Stormtropisgenus. All …

Flickr Cofounder Questions Techs Impact on Humans

“Should this exist?” is not typically a question that technologists ask themselves, Caterina Fake says. The Flickr cofounder turned investor says that most entrepreneurs and engineers will ask themselves, “Can this exist, could this exist, how can we gain the funding to make this exist? Those are the conversations we’ve been having for the past 15 to 20 years about technology.” But that narrative in tech is evolving, Fake tells WIRED on this week’s Gadget Lab podcast, from one of ideation, optimism, and changing the world to a stark reality in which technology can do as much harm as good. The cracks are showing, and suddenly, Fake says, “people are asking, ‘Whoa, what have we done? Is this what we …

Catholic Church criticizes amnesty proposal in El Salvador

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – Catholic Church leaders in El Salvador have condemned a proposal being considered by lawmakers that would grant amnesty to those who committed serious crimes during the country’s civil conflict in the 1980s and early 1990s. The Episcopal Conference of El Salvador said in a statement Sunday that it would be an “unjust” law that would protect the perpetrators of heinous crimes while offering no reparations or protections for victims of human rights abuses. The constitutional arm of El Salvador’s Supreme Court ordered the congress in 2016 to draft a new reconciliation law by July 2019 that would lead to truth, justice and reparations for victims of the conflict.
