New York (CNN Business)A version of this article first appeared in the “Reliable Sources” newsletter. You can sign up for free right here. I just hope that everyone will pay attention to what the report actually says, not what partisans SAY it says. But with Attorney General Bill Barr trying to control the day’s narrative by holding a 9:30 a.m. press conference before the report is released, the information environment is going to be… confusing… to say the least. Lawmakers have been told they will receive the report in the 11 a.m. hour… So expect to know a lot more by lunchtime… What to expect… The cable news networks will have day-long coverage. Scientists Cure Patients With Bubble Boy Disease In Breakthrough Treatment

Scientists have used gene therapy to “cure” babies born with a rare, life-threatening immune condition dubbed “bubble boy” disease, otherwise known as X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID-X1). The condition was brought to the public spotlight with David Vetter, the boy born in 1971 who spent his life in a plastic bubble to protect his immune system from infection. He died at the age of 12 from a form of cancer called lymphoma, introduced to his delicate immune system by the Epstein-Barr virus. This, it should be noted, is not the standard course of treatment nowadays for those with the disease and has only been used in a few cases.  The patients in the current trial “are toddlers now, who are …

Warning over ‘unexplained’ school moves

‘Uncomfortable reality’ The practice of so-called “off-rolling” is where schools are accused of trying to remove pupils who might have challenging behaviour, or whose poor results might damage league table performances. The think tank does not say how many might be off-rolled, but it suggests a proportion of these moves might be the result of schools pushing out pupils, rather than choices made by parents. Excluded pupils abandoned by schools Is knife crime linked to exclusions? Special needs pupils ‘spend years out of school’ Paul Whiteman, leader of the National Association of Head Teachers, warned “not to conflate and condemn all the different reasons a pupil might leave a school’s roll. Watching Notre Dame burn, the entire world was in pain

(CNN)The spire tumbling down in a blaze, the flames shooting out behind the familiar faade of Notre Dame Cathedral in the heart of Paris, made our throats close in anguish. French President Emmanuel Macron said his thoughts were with “all Catholics and all French people,” but in fact, it felt like the entire world was in pain watching the 800-year-old building turn into a blazing inferno, on its way to becoming ashes and stones. In a time of inflamed political, religious and sectarian divisions, somehow, a fire in a Catholic church, a cathedral in France, managed to melt away the animosity — if only for a moment — and bring people together in shared sorrow. Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Jew, or …

Study says Seattle is the most dog-friendly city in the U.S.

Some eagles are just too radical to be confined by heteronormative bird monogamy.  Consider this “polyamorous” family of bald eagle trailblazers, featuring two male eagles, Valor I and Valor II, and one female eagle, Starr, located in Southern Illinois near the upper portion of the Mississippi River. While some people have been following the non-traditional family for years, the Stewards of the Upper Mississippi River Ridge, an educational non-profit dedicated to the region, just posted a new livestream of the eagle family for nesting season.
